Icon Cancer Centre and Bowel Cancer Australia are helping to further close the care gap across the country, with four new specialist Bowel Care Nurses appointed at Icon cancer centres.

The nurses have been appointed in the following locations:

  • Revesby, New South Wales
  • Mackay, Queensland
  • Windsor Gardens, South Australia
  • Hobart, Tasmania

Recruitment is also underway for a specialist Bowel Cancer Nurse at Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham in Western Australia.

“It’s wonderful to have the specialist Bowel Cancer Nurses on board, especially during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in June. They have already hit the ground running and are making a difference, providing information, support and expert care to bowel cancer patients at Icon,” says Icon Cancer Centre Australia and New Zealand CEO, Paul Fenton.

A Bowel Care Nurse is a registered nurse who has specialist knowledge and experience caring for people with bowel cancer, serving as their main point of contact during and beyond cancer treatment.

Bowel Care Nurses provide care coordination, direct patient care, emotional support as well as assist patients in navigating a sometimes complex health system, enabling them to take a more active role in their treatment and care.

“Access to a nurse specialist by phone or in-person has been identified by more than eight in ten (83%) bowel cancer patients as an important resource to improve their care coordination,” says Bowel Cancer Australia CEO, Julien Wiggins.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer in-person care for bowel cancer patients in these new Icon locations.”

Care coordination is recognised as an important feature of high-quality person-centred cancer care and essential to ensure optimal patient outcomes, but research shows less than a third of all people diagnosed with Australia’s second deadliest cancer have a cancer care coordinator providing this type of support.
