Katie’s story - Icon Cancer Foundation

Katie's story

This year’s Icon Cancer Foundation appeal features Hobart mother of two and Icon Cancer Centre patient, Katie. We are proud to share Katie’s story in her own words. Through her reflections, she offers a personal insight into her diagnosis and treatment at Icon, the strength she has found in her community and how she continues to find positivity in the small moments.

A life-altering moment

It was November 2024. I will never forget the moment I received the news of my diagnosis. I felt numb, went into shock. I could hear my husband, Andrew, asking the doctor questions – but I felt like I was going to faint.  At the age of 48 years old, I had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel Cancer.

Early in 2024, I started experiencing cramping, with my stomach issues progressively getting worse. I was also experiencing some respiratory issues.

Initially the general practitioner (GP) thought it may be a food intolerance. And when that wasn’t the case - the GP asked if I was anxious or stressed, saying it could be mental health related. I had a strong feeling that something else was causing my health issues, so I requested further testing.

Following scans and a colonoscopy confirming bowel cancer, I had a lung biopsy and received the heartbreaking diagnosis that the bowel cancer had spread to my lungs.

I remember arriving home after I received my diagnosis. Walking into the house I looked at everything we’d worked for, and I said to Andrew: “With what we are facing, all of these material things mean nothing now.” It really changed my perspective on life.

In the weeks following my diagnosis, I underwent surgery to remove the tumour in my bowel.

The week before Christmas, I commenced chemotherapy and immunotherapy at Icon Cancer Centre Hobart under the care of medical oncologist, Associate Professor Louise Nott (“Dr Lou” as I know her).

Care at Icon Cancer Centre

The treatment I have received at Icon Cancer Centre Hobart has been extraordinary.

I remember feeling overwhelmed by the fast pace of treatment after diagnosis. I am grateful to Dr Lou for partnering with my colorectal surgeon Dr Srini Yellapu and directing the way forward.  They provided personalised care and have been influential in encouraging us to stay positive and live life to the fullest.

Dr Lou has been amazing from the start. Before I experience side effects from my treatment, she prepares me with solutions and medications to assist.  Staying positive and engaged in life is vital for my mental and physical health.

Dr Lou has provided treatment options which enable me to work in a job I love. This helps bring normality to my life, along with the support from my workplace friends.

Dr Lou always asks how Andrew, and my children Mitchell and Charlotte are. She considers them in my treatment plan to ensure family life isn’t too disrupted.

I have full faith in Dr Lou’s care and her knowledge on research into new treatments. Currently we’re focused on keeping the cancer stable, ready for any new treatments that become available.

Paula, the Specialist Bowel Care Nurse at Icon Cancer Centre Hobart has been a great listener. She is always there for me; answers any questions, provides perspective and encourages me.

Every person I have encountered at Icon has been wonderful. There have been many days where nurses stay with me while I cry and feel overwhelmed. They are so patient, providing reassurance and always help put a smile on my face.

Supporting others through treatment

Despite her own health challenges, Katie is quick to point out “there are other people who are worse off than I am.”

With the help of her children, Katie has been putting together care packages for other patients going through chemotherapy, with handmade bottle bags, fidget toys for anxiety and items she found useful during her own treatment.

“I know that not everyone receives the wonderful support that I have,” says Katie. “This is a little way that we can help others during their treatment.”

Finding strength in community

With the support of the team at Icon and our loved ones, my family and I continue to do the things that bring us joy in life.

Andrew, the children and I have been so well supported by our extended family, church community, workplaces and friends since day one. We are so grateful for the many special friends and churches praying for our family across Australia and beyond.

I continue to work part time, play piano and sing at my local church. As a family we enjoy travelling, attending basketball and footy games together, along with family bike rides when I’m able. Our family pets have been so therapeutic for us all through this season, and they know the days I need extra comfort from them.

Growing sunflowers with my daughter brightens our days. Listening to music is uplifting, along with Andrew, Mitch and Charlotte playing guitar and piano in the house on those hard days. All of these things bring peace and joy to me when fatigue and side effects are present.

Each day is precious and there is so much to be grateful for. My faith is an important aspect of this positive outlook. I know I'm not alone in this and no matter the outcome I have peace in my future.

You have to look forward in life, taking one day at a time. There are so many beautiful things in life to enjoy, and I intend on making the most of them.
