Biography
Dr David Newsome is committed to delivering thoughtful, evidence-based cancer care tailored to each patient’s individual needs. As a Canberra local who grew up in the region, he brings a deep understanding and connection to the community he serves. He takes pride in fostering meaningful relationships with his patients, providing clear communication, compassion and support throughout every stage of their treatment journey.
Dr David Newsome is a radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Canberra. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with distinction from Monash University in 2014, following the completion of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) at the University of Melbourne, where he majored in physiology and neuroscience. Dr Newsome was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) in 2024 after completing specialist radiation oncology training at Canberra Hospital and St George Hospital in Sydney.
Dr Newsome has previously held staff specialist positions at Illawarra Cancer Care Centre in Wollongong, where he developed comprehensive clinical expertise across a broad range of tumour types. He now focuses on the treatment of prostate and genitourinary cancers, skin cancers, lung cancers and gastrointestinal cancers, while maintaining skills in managing all tumour streams. He has a particular interest in stereotactic radiotherapy and provides treatment for both brain and body sites. Dr Newsome also has an interest in treating selected benign hyperproliferative and degenerative conditions, including Dupuytren disease and osteoarthritis. He is actively involved in multidisciplinary care, clinical governance and medical education, and contributes to registrar supervision as well as teaching within the RANZCR Radiation Oncology training program.
He maintains a strong commitment to research and medical education and was recently appointment an honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Australian National University for his work with medical student teaching. With a strong academic background, Dr Newsome has authored several published papers and had work presented at both national and international conferences, including ESTRO 2024 in Glasgow. His research interests include diagnostic approaches for radiation necrosis and personalised treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation of medical professionals and has been actively involved in teaching across multiple university programs. Dr Newsome values collaborative, patient-centred care and is committed to continuous learning, innovation, and driving quality improvement in cancer treatment.
