Biography
Dr Vasey combines a strong research background with a compassionate and supportive approach to patient care. Paul has devoted a career to advancing treatments for women’s cancers, genitourinary cancers and lung cancers, in addition to providing local cancer care to patients in outer metro communities.
Dr Paul Vasey’s medical journey began in Scotland in 1988. His early career saw him involved in pivotal clinical and laboratory research, notably his MD thesis on ‘Invitro Studies of Cisplatin-resistant Human Ovarian Carcinoma Cells’.
His commitment to cancer research led him to the esteemed Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow and later to the directorship of the West of Scotland Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) which, under his leadership, won Cancer Research UK’s prestigious Alpha* award.
Dr Vasey became a leading figure in UK oncology. Notably, he was a first author on the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) clinical practice guidelines for treating ovarian cancer and was on national steering groups for gynaecologic cancers and urological cancers. He has over 200 publications including chapters in textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, international conference contributions, and many other outputs.
2004 marked a new chapter for Dr Vasey when he moved his young family to Brisbane, Australia, accepting the role of staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Two years later, Dr Vasey entered private practice with Icon Oncology Group, and he is currently a visiting medical oncologist at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane and consults weekly at St Andrew’s Private Hospital in Ipswich.
From 2020 onward, his peer-reviewed contributions have focused on major phase III global clinical trials and early phase studies evaluating innovative immunotherapies and supportive treatments.
(Fun Fact: Outside of his exhaustive academic career, Dr Vasey is also a bestselling science fiction author, known for his hard sci-fi techno-thrillers. He has written six novels to date, and many are multiple international award winners.)
