Biography

Dr Joanne Tan is a medical oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Townsville. She completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at James Cook University and undertook advanced medical oncology training at tertiary hospitals in Brisbane and Townsville, Queensland.

In 2017, Dr Tan became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). She was subsequently appointed as a medical oncology staff specialist at Bundaberg Hospital, where she provided care to a wide range of cancer patients in the Wide Bay district, before returning to Townsville in late 2023. Alongside her practice at Icon, Dr Tan holds a medical oncology staff specialist appointment at Townsville University Hospital.

Dr Tan is a strong advocate for medical education, local research and clinical trials. She enjoys participating in cancer education and telechemotherapy programs to improve health outcomes in rural and regional areas. She has been an associate senior lecturer at the University of Queensland’s Rural Clinical School and remains actively involved in medical student and junior doctor education.

Dr Tan’s clinical experience covers a wide range of solid tumour malignancies, with a special interest in gastrointestinal cancer, gynaecological cancer and breast cancer.
