Dr Chamitha Weerasinghe is a compassionate and highly skilled radiation oncologist who is dedicated to delivering evidence-based care through a patient-centred, holistic lens. She is deeply committed to supporting her patients through their cancer journey. Dr Weerasinghe’s approach is grounded in both scientific rigour and human compassion, ensuring her patients feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their care.

Biography

Dr Chamitha Weerasinghe is a radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Gosford. Dr Weerasinghe completed her Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Newcastle, in 2015 and undertook specialist training in radiation oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) in 2023 and completed a clinical and research fellowship at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre in Westmead.

With a strong commitment to community engagement and cancer awareness, Dr Weerasinghe is passionate about early detection, prevention, and demystifying radiation therapy. She has presented at numerous community forums, including public education sessions on the upcoming lung cancer screening program, and has hosted information evenings to help patients better understand their treatment options. She has also served as a committee member for the Targeting Cancer initiative, advocating for broader public awareness of radiation oncology.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Weerasinghe brings a strong background in medical education, research, and leadership. She is affiliated with the University of Sydney, where she contributes to the training and mentorship of medical students. She has held several key leadership roles, including Chair of the Radiation Oncology Trainee Committee (ROTC) and President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Radiation Oncology Trainees (ANZSROT), where she championed the development of the next generation of specialists.

Dr Weerasinghe is currently pursuing a PhD focused on understanding the pathways of radiation resistance – research that aims to enhance treatment effectiveness for future patients. She also plays an active role in the development of national cancer treatment protocols through her work with EviQ committees, particularly in the areas of breast and genitourinary cancers.
