Townsville local and registered nurse, Carla Gillespie, has taken on a newly created role at Icon Cancer Centre as the centre’s first Specialist Melanoma Nurse, focusing on supporting patients going through melanoma treatment in the region.

Carla, who has worked at Icon for more than eight years, officially started in the role in February. Funded by the Australian Government through Melanoma Institute Australia, the position is a first for Icon Group and reflects a growing need for dedicated melanoma care in North Queensland.

“Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australia, and it’s great to see more attention being given to it,” Carla said.

“With newer treatments like immunotherapy, there’s a lot of progress happening in the field.”

In her new role, Carla supports patients through all stages of their treatment, from referral and education to coordinating care and offering emotional support. She works closely with the wider clinical team to help ensure patients receive consistent and personalised care.

“I try to see every melanoma patient on active treatment who comes through our centre. If I can help make the experience a little easier or less overwhelming, then that’s what I’m here for,” she said.

Carla graduated from James Cook University and has been a registered nurse in Townsville since 2009. She joined Icon Group in 2016 and later completed further cancer nursing studies through the Australian College of Nursing.

She said the decision to take on the new role came after being inspired by the work of Professors Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer who were named Australians of the Year in 2024.

“Watching their speeches was a turning point for me. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution in melanoma care,” she said.

Icon Cancer Centre site manager Georgina Whelan said Carla’s commitment to patients and her knowledge of oncology nursing made her a natural fit for the role.

“Carla’s passion and expertise are evident in every patient interaction,” Georgina said.

“She’s not only a strong advocate for her patients, but also a leader in shaping this new role and setting a benchmark for melanoma care in regional centres.”

Carla hopes the role will continue to evolve and help strengthen melanoma care in regional areas.

“Ultimately, it’s about making sure people here in Townsville and across North Queensland get the same support as they would in a bigger city,” she said.
