Dr Sebastian Rees is deeply committed to providing care for people with a life-limiting illness. He brings a holistic, patient-centred approach to his practice with an aim to improve the overall quality of life of his patients and their loved ones.
Biography
Dr Sebastian Rees is a palliative care specialist consulting at Icon Cancer Centre Adelaide (Kurralta Park) and Icon Cancer Centre Windsor Gardens in South Australia.
Dr Rees completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 2009. He received his general medical training in Adelaide, Australia and became a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RACGP) in 2014.
As a General Practitioner (GP), Dr Rees developed a strong interest in the care of elderly people with a particular focus on symptom management, chronic disease management and end of life care. He is also passionate about continuously improving the quality of care provided to his patients and increasing society’s health literacy of old age, death and dying.
In 2013, Dr Rees co-founded 24-7MedCare (formerly GenWise Health), an online platform connecting Aged Care Facilities with GPs. The company grew to become Australia’s leading provider of specialised aged care GP services and has been awarded the Telstra Australian Business of the Year Award and ABA100 Winner World Business Award for Service and Product Innovation.
In 2018, Dr Rees published ‘The Aged Care Book’, a guideline informing families of the ‘need to knows’ when caring for a someone in old age. In recognition of his contribution to the aged care sector, Dr Rees received the inaugural ‘First amongst equals’ award at the South Australian 40Under40 Awards.
Dr Rees completed three years of specialist palliative medicine training across various hospitals in Adelaide, South Australia and became a Fellow of the RACP Australian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FAChPM) in February 2024.
Alongside his practice at Icon, he is a Palliative Medicine Specialist at Ashford Hospital, Adelaide. He maintains a special clinical interest in palliative medicine, symptom management and end of life planning.
Outside of his clinical work, Dr Rees enjoys time with his family exploring the South Australian outdoors.
