Dr Peter Fon has a strong commitment to delivering prompt, personalised care to his patients and the North Queensland community. He is an experienced radiation oncologist, bringing a calm, compassionate approach to his practice. Dr Fon’s patients benefit from his extensive knowledge and understanding of cancer care and ability to communicate using clear, simple language with his patients and their loved ones.
Dr Peter Fon is a consultant radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Mackay. He also consults at Townsville Cancer Centre.
He began his training in radiation oncology at the Queensland Radium Institute, and completed his training at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, UK. Dr Fon has been working in North Queensland for 21 years, initially as a general radiation oncologist treating all cancers. In the last few years he has subspecialised into the fields of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, gynaecological cancer and rectal cancer.
He also has an interest in brachytherapy for prostate and gynaecological cancers. Radionuclide therapy has been another interest hence he also treats thyroid cancer.
Despite his subspecialty interests, he is keen to treat all the major cancers of North Queensland including breast and skin cancer.
Dr Fon is a member of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology Genito-Urinary Group (FROGG), the Australian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group (AGITG), the Australasian Brachytherapy Group (ABG) and Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG), as well as a fellow of three colleges- ANZ, UK, and Ireland.
Away from work, he is a keen cyclist, being a member of Townsville Cycle Club TCC. He aims to complete more charity bike rides including the annual Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride for Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia, the annual Banish the Black Dog Ride for Rotary Club, and the Adelaide Tour Down Under BUPA challenge ride for the Cancer Council.
