Biography

Dr Lakmalie Perera is an experienced senior radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Norwest, bringing nearly 20 years’ experience in the management and treatment of head and neck cancer and skin cancers. She completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of New South Wales and undertook specialist radiation oncology training at Royal Prince Alfred, Westmead and Nepean Hospitals. In 2006 Dr Perera became a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) and practiced as a radiation oncology staff specialist at Westmead and Nepean Hospitals, where she specialised in head and neck cancer and skin cancers.

During her time at Westmead Hospital, Dr Perera remained at the forefront of new technologies in radiation therapy treatment. She was pivotal in introducing and implementing intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) at Westmead Hospital for the treatment of head and neck cancer in 2007. Dr Perera also played an integral role in developing the head and neck cancer treatment guidelines for Western Sydney and Nepean Hospitals.

She has a strong education focus and was fundamental in developing the radiation oncology educational program at Westmead and Nepean Hospitals. She has mentored many radiation oncology trainees in her role as Director of Clinical Training over the past 17 years. She has organised exam preparation courses nationally and coordinated clinical fellowship exams. Dr Perera has also taught ENT surgical trainees and dental students. In 2010 Dr Perera established an affiliation with the University of Western Sydney and developed a program for medical students to rotate through radiation oncology, to gain an appreciation of both the speciality and a cancer patient’s journey.

Dr Perera continues to be actively involved in medical education, research, multidisciplinary care and implementing cutting-edge treatment options to optimise patient outcomes. Her current appointments include Head and Neck and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Senior Radiation Oncology Clinical Lead and Director of Training at Nepean Hospital and Conjoint Senior Lecturer at Western Sydney University. Her clinical experience covers a broad range of solid tumour malignancies with a special clinical interest in head and neck cancer and skin cancer.
