Merv continues to look on the bright side of life during cancer treatment

Icon Writer / 02 Aug, 2024

When talking about his recent prostate cancer battle, Chelsea Heights resident Merv’s positive outlook on life shines through.

“After having both my hips replaced and having 28 odd basal cell carcinomas and one melanoma removed, this was another stage in my life that required resolving,” says 72-year-old Merv.

“Always look on the bright side of life, a Monty Python saying, and be positive in everything you do.”

Merv’s prostate cancer treatment journey started in 2021.

“I had my prostate removed via robotic surgery in July 2021 by Kevin Chu, a urologist at Holmesglen Hospital. After the removal of my prostate, my prostate-specific antigen (PSA) started at .02 and crept up to .1 in January 2024. I was getting three monthly checks and decided to go the extra step, as it appeared the cancer was outside my prostate. Kevin referred me to Icon Cancer Centre Holmesglen radiation oncologist, Prof Shankar Siva and I decided to commence radiation therapy before the PSA went higher. I was not experiencing any symptoms but the sooner I started, the better the result,” says Merv.

“I had 33 radiation therapy treatments each day excluding public holidays and weekends. The hardest thing I had to do was have a full bladder and no blockages in my bowel. Drinking two litres of water an hour prior the treatment was very difficult. The treatment only took ten minutes – five minutes to ensure the bladder and bowel were ok and five minutes for the radiation process. It was very convenient as it’s close to home.”

Merv is full of praise for his wife, Anne and their sons. He also extends that praise to the Icon Holmesglen team.

“Anne has always been very supportive when I have been having any type of treatment and I thank her for that. My boys have taken it in their stride and had positive thoughts,” says Merv.

“Everyone (at Icon) made the process go smoothly and they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. It was made clear early in my treatment that it was helpful talking to people in the waiting room, who has the same or a similar condition to me. We discussed every part of the process, nothing was taboo. We even had a lunch with three of the other men who had finished their treatment, along with their wives, which was a huge success.

“When I finished my radiation therapy, I took pictures of as many of the Icon staff as possible and rang the bell. I gave the staff a hamper with goodies for morning tea and a card with my gratitude. I also enjoyed dinner at the golf club with friends to celebrate.”

Merv now has an important message to share with other men.

“I am telling everyone who listens to get checked as soon as possible, especially at my age. I was very surprised just how many men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. My message is simple: get checked regularly, as the sooner it is picked up, the better chance of successful treatment,” says Merv.

Merv is now back enjoying the hobbies that bring him joy.

“Being retired for 18 years, I took up golf and have enjoyed the activity ever since. I travel around the world playing golf in countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and even South Africa,” says Merv.
