Icon Cancer Centre (Icon) is proud to launch the 2026 Radiation Therapy Bonded Scholarship Program, designed to support final-year radiation therapy graduate students in building rewarding careers while delivering world-class care to regional communities.

The program provides students in Australia with up to $30,000 in financial support in return for a three-year commitment to work at one of Icon’s regional centres upon graduation. With five scholarships available, one student will be supported at each of the following locations: Cairns, Hobart, Mildura, Toowoomba, and Warrnambool.

This initiative allows students to fast-track their career in cancer care by gaining hands-on experience in a supportive, state-of-the-art centre, as part of a growing global organisation.

Successful applicants will work across a diverse case mix within a multidisciplinary environment, supported by personalised mentoring. By joining Icon Cancer Centre, students will develop as radiation therapists with opportunities to learn, grow, and lead in their field.

Icon Cancer Centre Cairns site manager, Brock Ditton, knows firsthand the value of the program, having begun his career as a bonded scholar before going on to lead two regional centres.

“I was fortunate to be a bonded scholar myself, an opportunity that connected me with cancer care services in North Queensland and shaped the direction of my career,” he said.

“Working in regional cancer care has provided me with a broad clinical exposure, accelerated my development, and has given me the privilege of making a real difference in the lives of patients and their families.”

Brock’s career highlights include helping to establish and lead a brand-new radiation oncology service in Mackay, the first for the community. Today, he manages two world-class regional centres in Cairns and has witnessed the profound impact of skilled radiation therapists in regional communities.

“Working in these centres allows radiation therapists to fast-track their careers, gaining broad exposure across planning, treatment, and patient care while being supported by the latest technologies and close-knit teams,” he said.

“This scholarship provides students with the same opportunity I had: a supported pathway into regional practice, financial assistance during their studies, and the chance to deliver world-class care where it’s needed most.”

Icon Cancer Centre Australia & New Zealand CEO, Paul Fenton, said the program reflects Icon’s long-standing commitment to strengthening the future cancer care workforce.

“Radiation therapy is such an important part of modern cancer treatment. In fact, around half of all new cancer patients will benefit from radiation therapy. Our highly skilled radiation therapists do incredible work: from carefully mapping and planning treatment, to operating advanced technology and delivering it directly to patients. Just as importantly, they provide vital support and reassurance, walking alongside patients during one of the toughest times in their lives,” Paul said.

“As demand for cancer care grows, we face a pressing need for more radiation therapists across the country, particularly in regional communities where access to treatment can be limited. This scholarship program is designed to address that need by supporting the next generation of allied health professionals to build rewarding careers in the field.

“We are investing in the future of cancer care; ensuring more people can access world-class treatment close to home, delivered by compassionate and dedicated professionals.

Final-year students enrolled in an approved tertiary Radiation Therapy course are encouraged to apply and take the next step in shaping the future of cancer care with Icon. Students accepted into the program will be matched with a sponsoring centre, taking their location preferences into account.

The program builds on Icon’s Radiation Therapist Career Pathways program, designed to nurture radiation therapist through clear career pathways, offering a wide range of dynamic roles blending patient care with advanced technical skills.

At Icon, radiation therapists can expand their expertise, cultivate leadership abilities, and shape the future of cancer care technologies and treatments among a growing international team. Whether drawn to patient-centred roles, leadership ambitions, or technological innovation, Icon provides the resources and support to build a career that aligns with personal and professional goals.
