Biography
Dr Roland Yeghiaian-Alvandi is senior radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Norwest, bringing over 25 years’ experience in the management and treatment of lung cancer. In 1984 he completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of New South Wales and undertook specialist training in radiation oncology and palliative medicine at Royal Prince Alfred, Prince of Wales and St George Hospitals. He was subsequently awarded fellowship at both the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) and Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FAChPM).
He remains committed to excellence in patient-centred care, medical education and academic research. As a founding member of the Westmead Thoracic Oncology Group, he was instrumental in establishing multidisciplinary lung cancer services in Western Sydney. Dr Yeghiaian-Alvandi has been actively involved in the teaching and supervision of radiation oncology trainees and medical students for more than 15 years and in 2019 his dedication to medical education was recognised by the Westmead Association Award for Excellence in Teaching. His past appointments include Director of Training at Westmead, Blacktown and Nepean Hospitals and Chair of the Westmead and Nepean Hospital Research Committees.
Dr Yeghiaian-Alvandi maintains a strong interest in cutting-edge research and clinical trials. He has published extensively in the field of thoracic oncology and has been invited speaker at national and international meetings. Alongside his practice at Icon, Dr Yeghiaian-Alvandi’s current appointments include Senior Radiation Oncology Staff Specialist, Deputy Head of Department and Director of Training at Nepean Hospital and VMO Radiation Oncologist and Head of Department at Gosford Hospital. He is the Thoracic Radiation Oncology Clinical Lead at both hospitals.
He has specialist expertise in the use of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and stereotactic radiation therapy (SBRT) techniques. His clinical experience covers a wide range of solid tumour malignancies with a special interest in lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymic malignancies and palliative radiation therapy.
