Biography

Prof Gerald Fogarty is an experienced radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre sites in Revesby, Gosford and Wahroonga. In 1983 he completed his Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of New South Wales. Prof Fogarty undertook radiation oncology training at Geelong Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre where he gained extensive experience in the management and treatment of skin cancer and melanoma. In 2003 he became a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) and in 2013 completed a PhD investigating the advances in radiation therapy for skin cancer treatment at the University of Technology Sydney.

Relocating to Sydney in 2006, Prof Fogarty was appointed as radiation oncology consultant at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and from 2007 to 2016 was Mater Hospital’s Site Director and Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist in North Sydney. Over the last 10 years Prof Fogarty has held senior radiation oncology positions at Macquarie University Hospital, Skin & Cancer Foundation and Melanoma Institute of Australia. Before commencing at Icon Cancer Centre, he was the Site Director and Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney from 2016 to 2021. His career goal is to establish level one evidence base for therapies in cancer, especially in skin cancer, to achieve the best possible treatment outcome for patients.

Prof Fogarty maintains a strong interest in clinical research and education, actively engaging in the education and mentorship of emerging medical professionals. He is the Master of Warrane College and holds academic appointments at the University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, University of Notre Dame and Macquarie University Hospital. Prof Fogarty is a regular invited speaker to national and international conferences and has authored over 180 publications including the radiation therapy section of the 2019 NHMRC Management of Keratinocyte Guidelines.

Prof Fogarty remains at the forefront of new technologies in radiation therapy treatment and is a leading specialist in the use of stereotactic radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), intensity modulated (IMRT) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) techniques. His clinical experience covers a broad range of solid tumour malignancies, with a special interest in skin cancer and benign skin conditions amenable to radiation therapy.
