How to Become a Patient at Icon Cancer Centre

At Icon Cancer Centre, we understand that being diagnosed with cancer can feel overwhelming and it can be helpful to understand what to do next. We aim to make your journey with us as smooth as possible. Our team of administration professionals, nurses and specialist doctors provide a supportive pathway for patients, guiding you from your initial diagnosis through to treatment.

While everyone’s circumstances are different, the following four steps are a common pathway for our patients after an initial diagnosis.

1. Getting a Referral

The first step is choosing your treatment location and specialist. As a private patient you have a say and can select your treatment location and specialist doctor. If you would like to receive treatment at your local Icon Cancer Centre, ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist at your nearest location. Icon Cancer Centre has a team of over 200 dedicated specialists with expertise in various types of cancer and treatment techniques. You can reach out to us with an enquiry or directly contact your closest Icon Cancer Centre.

2. Your Initial Consultation

Once we have received your referral, one of our friendly team members will contact you to organise an initial consult with the specialist. Your first appointment will be with an experienced specialist who will discuss your diagnosis and proposed treatment plan. This is an opportunity to address any concerns and ask questions. Find out what types of questions you should ask your doctor by download our free guide below. At Icon, your doctor will be with you every step of the way, continuing to care for you throughout your entire treatment journey.

3. Preparing for Treatment

Following your initial consultation, a member of our experienced care team will discuss your treatment in detail. They will explain what to expect, potential side effects, and how to manage them. They will also address any concerns or worry you or your family may be feeling. Our team collaborates with your doctor to ensure your care plan is customised to your specific needs. Your preparation for treatment will differ, depending on the type of treatment you are starting. Our team have put together helpful resources for preparing for radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

4. Commencing Treatment

The next step is starting your treatment. The duration of your appointment and treatment cycle will depend on the specific treatment administered. Throughout your treatment journey and beyond, your doctor and care team will monitor your progress, manage side effects, and address any concerns or fears you may have. We encourage you to seek clarity and reassurance to ensure you are confident in your treatment and choices. It is important to us that you feel as comfortable and informed as possible during your visit.
