Icon Cancer Centre bringing radiation therapy to St John of God Subiaco Hospital

Icon Cancer Centre will open a new state-of-the-art radiation oncology service at St John of God Subiaco Hospital in Perth, Western Australia in 2026, supporting the local community to access the latest advancements in cancer treatment closer to home, under the one roof. 

Each year, over 13,000 West Australians are diagnosed with cancer, with approximately 50% of those patients requiring radiation therapy as part of their treatment. 

Icon’s new radiation oncology service will be equipped with a state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator (linac), providing access to world-class treatment options for local cancer patients.

The suite includes stereotactic radiation therapy, an advanced technique used to treat well-defined tumours or high-risk postoperative areas and HyperArc technology for patients with secondary brain tumours, which reduces the impact of side effects compared to traditional radiation to the brain, including headaches and hair loss. 

Integrated service 

Radiation therapy services will be a welcome addition to St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s current cancer care services, including:  

• Chemotherapy 

• Immunotherapy  

• Cancer-related surgery 

• Early access to leading-edge treatments and clinical trials 

• Allied health support including social workers, dietitians, case managers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and pharmacists 

• Pain and symptom management 

• Pastoral services. 

Community benefit 

St John of God Subiaco Hospital CEO Tina Chinery said Icon Cancer Centre presence onsite would significantly benefit the community and support the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive cancer care and services. 

“At present, only select radiation therapies are offered to patients in our hospital’s operating theatres. Patients are therefore generally required to seek radiation treatment at facilities elsewhere, as recommended by their medical specialist,” Ms Chinery said.  

“Being able to access radiation therapy onsite will save our patients time and offer them convenience and familiarity during what can be a very unfamiliar experience. 

“Most importantly, Icon will equip the facility with the latest innovations, contributing to optimum patient outcomes and reflecting our hospital’s focus on excellence and delivering the highest standard of safe clinical care.” 

The new radiation therapy service is expected to open to patients in early 2026 and will mark Icon’s third centre in Western Australia, alongside Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham and Icon Cancer Centre Midland.
