Icon Cancer Centre Midland has doubled its treatment capacity with the opening of a second state-of-the-art linac. The new Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerator increases access to cutting-edge radiation therapy for cancer patients across Perth’s eastern corridor and the East Metropolitan Health Service catchment, delivering more than 9,000 treatments annually.

This second linac allows the centre to meet growing patient demand while maintaining the highest standards of care, delivering precise, efficient treatment using the latest technology available in radiation oncology.

Icon Midland is the only private provider of integrated cancer treatment in the area, led by a local team of highly experienced cancer specialists who provide a wide range of cutting-edge treatment options including radiation therapy, chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders.

Since opening in 2017, Icon Midland has remained committed to delivering world-class cancer care closer to home. Equipped with cutting-edge radiation therapy capabilities, including

Stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) for all tumour streams, tattooless radiation therapy for breast cancer patients and HyperArc™ technology for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), enabling highly targeted treatment of brain tumours.

The centre implemented RapidArc® technology earlier this year, an advanced treatment technique that reduces the time between consultation and therapy and reduces radiation exposure and potential side effects for patients. Icon is the first in the Southern Hemisphere and only the third worldwide to clinically treat with RapidArc Dynamic, marking a major step forward in radiation therapy, particularly for patients with breast and prostate cancer.

Icon Midland’s integrated, multidisciplinary care model ensures that patients benefit from coordinated support throughout their treatment journey. The centre’s allied health team includes specialist prostate, breast and bowel cancer nurses, dietitians, exercise physiologists, and psychologists, delivering holistic care tailored to individual needs.

As part of this growth, Icon Midland is pleased to welcome Radiation Oncologist Dr Stephen Kennedy, who consults at both Icon Midland and Icon Rockingham. Dr Kennedy brings extensive clinical expertise across a broad range of tumour types, with particular interest in:

  • Lung cancer
  • Central nervous system (brain and spinal) malignancies
  • Genitourinary cancers
  • Skin cancers
  • Lymphoma and haematological malignancies
  • Stereotactic radiation therapy

Dr Kennedy brings a wealth of knowledge and a steadfast commitment to improving patient outcomes through evidence-based practice and innovation.

His collaborative approach and compassionate manner ensure patients feel supported and informed throughout their care.

This latest investment in technology and talent reflects Icon’s dedication to ensuring more Western Australians can access high-quality, comprehensive cancer treatment when and where they need it.

Two new Radiation Oncologists will also be joining the Icon Cancer Centre WA Team in the coming months.

Icon Cancer Centre State Manager for WA, Colin La Galia, said,

“We continue to grow our team, footprint and value-added services to meet the demand of our patients in Midland, Swan Hills and surrounding areas.

“We will continue to invest in our business and our people to bring the most advanced, cutting-edge technologies in cancer care treatment to our patients.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved and our contribution to the community in providing the best cancer care, to as many people as possible, as close to home as possible.”
