Dr Suresh Varma is an experienced medical oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Townsville. In 1979 he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India. Dr Varma subsequently completed his Doctor of Medicine MD (General Medicine) in 1983 and Doctorate in Medicine (Medical Oncology) in 1992. He later became a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) in 2010.
Dr Varma has worked across India, Botswana and Bahrain and has been actively involved in training and teaching medical students both overseas and in Australia. In a previous position at the MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Care Centre in Hyderabad, Dr Varma initiated medical oncology services as an independent unit for the first time. He has been working as a medical oncologist in Townsville since 2008 and is passionate about top quality cancer care for rural patients. Dr Varma is actively involved in research and clinical trials and is a principal investigator in major trials in solid tumours.
His clinical experience covers a broad range of solid tumour malignancies with a special interest in gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer and germ cell tumours. He is also available for private medical oncology services in Mackay through an outreach service.
